EtG / EtS Urine Alcohol Testing
ARCpoint Labs of Limerick offers alcohol EtG (Ethyl Glucuronide) & EtS (Ethyl Sulphate) urinalysis tests to businesses, attorneys or judicial systems. The advantages of alcohol EtG & EtS Urine Tests over other alcohol screening tests are that they record alcohol usage up to 80 hours after consumption.
Methods of Alcohol Testing
There are two common methods commonly used for alcohol testing – simple urine tests and breathalyzers.
These methods are used to detect if one has consumed alcohol recently. In the past, no method was able to ascertain if one had consumed alcohol after 24 hours had passed. This is because alcohol is processed by the body very rapidly, usually at a rate of 1 drink per hour.
ARCpoint Labs of Limerick is able to use two newly developed testing techniques – the EtG (Ethyl Glucuronide) Test & The EtS (Ethyl Sulphate) Test. These methods are now able to sketch down the whole alcoholic consumption history of the last 80 hours. This is a very useful tool for a “zero-tolerance” policy (extreme safety-sensitive situations), concerns about consumption in the workplace and in family court matters.
How Does an EtG/EtS Urine Alcohol Test Work?
Ethyl glucuronide (or EtG) is a metabolite only produced when alcohol is in the bloodstream. It is identified as a marker in alcohol through an analytical process that provides forensic evidence of the pattern of alcohol abuse – or absence of it.
The more alcohol a person consumes, the greater amount of EtG markers are present in the bloodstream. The presence of EtG in the urine can be used to detect recent alcohol consumption, even after the ethanol alcohol is no longer measurable. As a result, it can be determined that a urine alcohol test employing EtG is a more accurate indicator of the recent consumption of alcohol as opposed to simply measuring for the existence of ethanol alcohol.
If the laboratory detects the presence of EtG in the urine sample, it may then also test for the presence of EtS (another alcohol metabolite). Testing for both these metabolites improves the accuracy and reliability of the test.
Legal Uses of EtG/EtS Urine Testing
ARCpoint Labs of Limerick uses EtG / EtS Urine Testing for zero tolerance and alcohol abstinence programs such as Drug Courts, family law, treatment facilities, and school systems.
Features and benefits of EtG/EtS testing include:
- Combined test for EtG and EtS provides greater sensitivity and accuracy
- Ideal for zero tolerance and abstinence situations
- Strong indicator of ethanol ingestion within the previous 3 to 4 days
- Allows monitoring in alcohol treatment programs
- Acts as early warning system to detect trends towards relapse
- Tests performed by LC/MS/MS on state-of-the-art equipment
- EtG/EtS tests may be run on urine specimens in conjunction with other ARCpoint Labs of Limerick drug testing panels
- Fast turn-around time from receipt of specimen (typically 48 hours for a negative result, 72 hours for a positive result)
- Results available via internet, fax and/or U.S. Mail
A Medical Review Officer (MRO) service is available upon request to help identify “incidental exposure” to products or medications that might produce EtG/EtS positive test results.
